The 4 Best Things to do in Pula

Pula is most known for its amphitheater, but there is much more to it than that. It has a rich history of olive oil, ancient roman architectural remains, and beautiful beaches. In this guide I will give you the absolute best things to do in Pula.

Roman Amphitheater

What makes this amphitheater so cool? After all there are over 230 roman amphitheaters in the world. What makes the amphitheater in Pula so unique, is that it is the only roman amphitheater in the world that has all four of its side towers entirely preserved. Additionally, it is one of the largest of the six surviving amphitheaters. Tickets are around 10 euros a person to get inside. I opted to not go inside and just took pictures around the perimeter. You have a great line of sight to the interior of the arena from the outside, so I did not deem it necessary to go inside.

Museum Olei Histriae

I was ignorant of the layers of olive oil until I traveled to Croatia. Apparently in the states, olive oil is not well regulated. You can buy expensive olive oil in the states and it can just be canola oil lol. Mediterranean Europeans know olive oil and they know it well. If you want to be educated in olive oil in the best way possible (with food) then give this olive oil museum a go. It details the complex 2,000 year history of Istrian olive oil and has taste tests along the way. You will leave with a knowledge and understanding of what quality olive oil is and how to find it.

Roman Mosaic

Croatia was not safe from the bombing campaigns of WWII. In the midst of bombing an ancient roman mosaic was discovered. It depicts the Punishment of Dirce. Apparently this scene has few depictions in existence. It shows a woman (Dirce) being tied to a bull by two men. Dirce was a cruel trickster and was discovered in the midst of a manipulative plan, and as a result she was punished. The mosaic is located in/near a parking lot, so if you feel you are in the wrong spot, then you are indeed in the right spot.

Galebove Stijene

There are a number of beaches around Pula, but my absolute favorite was Galebove Stijene. You have to walk through the woods to get there, so it will be an adventure. It is not a sandy beach but rather a place to cliff jump. The water is pristine and clear. There are numerous cliffs to jump from, so if you are terrified of heights then rest assured there is something for your level. Cliff jumping in Croatia is definitely one of my core memories. Give this beautiful place a go!

Pula is definitely worth your time and is a hidden gem. I did not stay in Pula long but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. My next stop in the Balkans was Plitvice, the biggest and best national park in Croatia.
