3 Days in Korcula

We arrived in Korcula in the early evening. We hastily made our way to our Airbnb to drop off our luggage. The apartment we stayed in was lovely. It was located just outside of the old town at the top of a historic building.  Looking out the windows you could see the main street with restaurants, shops, people lazily walking about, and the sea all around. Our host was a designer so everything looked spectacular. Out of all the places we stayed at during our month in the Balkans, this was my favorite.

We freshened up and made our way to the Old Town. There we wandered about the many twisting alleyways and got lost in the hectic layout. After wandering about the Old Town we made our way to a restaurant called Skver that was recommended to us by a local and had some hand rolled macaroni. We were told that the hand rolled macaroni is famous on the island and a must try. The macaroni was amazing and definitely worth trying. With our bellies full, we settled down for the night, excited to spend the next two days living the Croatian island life.

Tip: When in Croatia, it is important you spend as much time as possible in the Old Towns. It seems like every city has an Old Town. The Old Towns are saturated with history, art, and culture

At the dawn of the following morning, we started our day by breaking our fast and discussing what we wanted to do. We ultimately decided to explore more of the Old Town. We wandered down the numerous alleyways, discovered some quaint shops, and took a great many photos. Once we satisfied our curiosity, we rented a Vespa and drove among the winding roads of the island. We traversed through vineyards, beaches, and charming towns. We eventually made our way to a beach to unwind, swim, and sunbathe. After a couple of hours or so, we made our way back to our Airbnb to freshen up for the evening activities.

Tip: You must rent a Vespa whenever possible on the Croatian islands. They are affordable and fun.

We made our way to a restaurant called Aterina, recommended to us by a local that overlooked the sea as the sun was setting. We ordered some fresh fish and took our time relaxing in the fresh, warm, sea air of the Adriatic sea. After dinner we wandered among the Old Town at night. On our way back to our Airbnb we stumbled upon a traditional dance in the public square that involved men with swords accompanied by women in traditional garb with klapa singers in the background. We watched mesmerized until their performance was finished and then laid our heads down to sleep.

The ensuing morning, we had breakfast and then made our way to the fortress overlooking the Old Town. The fortress was disappointing and is not worth your time. The one positive is that it was a nice workout hiking up the imposing hills. We made our way back to the Old Town and enjoyed some lunch. After lunch we ventured to a local market to pick up some snacks and refreshing drinks for the beach later.

Just like the previous day, we rented a Vespa and set out to explore more of the island and some new beaches. We spent the afternoon relaxing by the beach, snacking, and swimming. After some time we decided to go back to the Old Town for dinner.

The succeeding morning we woke up and decided to have a lazy day, as we had pretty much done everything we wanted to do on the island. We strolled about the Old Town, had some amazing pizza overlooking the sea, and napped in our Airbnb. When the time came, we bought a ferry ticket to Hvar and waited for our transport ship. When the ship arrived, we boarded and made our way to Hvar, the most well known Croatian Island.
