Setenil & Ronda

Intro

Two quintessential pueblos blancos in southern Spain. Olive groves, spanish countryside, and steeped in history. Beautiful and uncomplicated. The people of this region have discovered the optimal formula for living life. The siesta is still honored here. Sleepy towns during midday but come alive in the mornings and evenings. These towns have all the characteristics and charms of Andalucia.

Setenil de las Bodegas

The most interesting town in the world. Built into cliff overhangs and located atop a hill, this town presents you with stunning views of the Andalucian countryside. The River Trejo snakes its way through the town and houses besiege it on every side. This town was birthed from the remains of a Moorish fortress. It is ancient, being occupied as late as the first century AD, and perhaps even before then.

Wander the Streets

Street walking is the main activity here. Do not come here expecting an abounding amount of activities to do. This is a place to behold. It is beautiful, so take your camera with you and capture one of the most beautiful towns in the world. One of the most famous streets in the world is located here, Calle Cuevas de la Sombra. This street was assembled underneath a colossal rock. Stores squeeze together on both sides which schemes for a precise path. It is a wonder that cars can shrivel their way through. Just get lost, and enjoy the atmosphere of this charming town.

Tip: Follow the signs that have a camera on them. These signs will guide you to a dazzling scene.

Arab Fortress

This fortress had its conception in the 12th century. In times past there were over 40 towers dominating the town, but sadly only one remains today. When the Christians invaded, they blitzed the town and destroyed most of the fortress. From the top you are presented with a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. It costs one euro to enter.

Ronda

A mountain top town separated by a dramatic gorge and married together by a marvelous bridge. Ronda is beautiful, alluring, and stunning all at the same time. Bull fighting, siestas, and soaked in history. Ernest Hemingway and Orson Well’s spent many summers here. Their time spent here influenced many of the greatest American literary and cinematic masterpieces of all time. It is said that Hemingways For Whom The Bell Tolls and Orsons Don Quixote was inspired by their time in Ronda. So to put it simply, Ronda is a place that will inspire you.

Puente Nuevo de Ronda

This absolutely massive bridge stretches 390 feet over the void of the Tajo Gorge. This bridge connects the Old Town with the New Town. There are numerous viewpoints for the bridge, including overlooks at the Paseo de los Ingleses, overlooks in Jardines de Cuenca, and the river gorge path that starts at Plaza de Maria. Wherever you go in Ronda, this bridge will be there shining in all its brilliance.

Tip: Avoid hiking down into the river gorge during peak summer heat. Go in the morning or evening. It is a steep hike and you will melt in that intense summer Anducian heat on the climb back up.

Conclusion

Setenil de las Bodegas and Ronda are two of the most beautiful towns I have ever seen. I was constantly amazed at the beauty that surrounded me, both in landscapes and architecture. I was transported back in time to a simpler time. A time where people take a break in the heat of the day and enjoy the company of friends and family. A time when life was not so hectic. A time when life was beautiful.
